Album Review: Monsta X "Trespass"

I've became interested with these beautiful boys earlier this year. They were part of a survival/reality program for aspiring idols, No. Mercy. It was late 2014, when I first heard about No Mercy, but unfortunately didn't paid enough attention to them coz during that time, I was still spazzing to both Winner and iKon. But when I saw this beautiful boy while searching for perfect eyeliner styles (Yes! I was looking for random eyeliner tutorials on Google, and suddenly I saw this gif/thumbnail out of nowhere:
Bam! It was love at first sight, and I automatically became a fan. I started to back tracked everything about these boys and fell more in love with all of them. Now that they are all geared up to conquer the kpop scene with their interstellar hip hop sound and a new name as Monsta X, there is no better way to show my support but to make a review of their first EP, Trespass.
Monsta X came in with a powerful and invading entry track, Trespass. When I first saw the teaser video of the song, it immediately reminded me of 2 of my other favorite kpop groups mainly, BAP (Warrior) for its powerful sound, BTS (No More Dream), for the angst driven and boasting raps. It also reminded me of Teentop with their Miss Right video because of the prison concept of the video, thus giving a good impression and expectation of the whole album. Gladly when the full MV was released as well as the album, the boys did not disappoint my waiting heart. This powerful and addictive Mad Clown written track, sure knows how to trespass anyone's ear and make someone listen to it constantly on repeat. (I was one of them.) Though some thought it was a Jooheon feat. Monsta X track, because he sang/rapped almost half the track, I really think this Jooheon-filled arrangement created greater impact among the listeners. I am a Wonho stan, and yes, I am a little disappointed for he only had like 1 or 2 lines, but the beat and the feel of the song really screams for more angst and raps rather than soft vocals. Plus Shownu and Kihyun also showed amazing and powerful vocals to balance everything on this track, so I think everything turned out to be perfect for their debut track.
Next up, No Exit, written by Jooheon, IM and Kihyun and was featured and performed during their No Mercy days. Honestly, I'm not a fan of this track when they first performed it on No Mercy; to my senses, it was just messy and so out of place, so I was a little bit puzzled when I saw the album's official tracklist, and I'm sorry but I even removed this track off my Monsta X playlist. Thankfully, my sister was constantly jamming to this track on her phone, and now with a few changes on the arrangement, it seems like everything was in its perfect place. Their vocal tones were more controlled and  the choreography was way better than the first, but I'm still hooked on the "eh eh eh oh eh oh" choreography in their first performance tho. And yeah, this track is now permanently included in my Monsta X playlist.
After two booming power tracks, Monsta X turned things down with a seductively sexy track One Love. With lyrics written by rappers IM and Jooheon, its sexy laid back beat and powerful yet seductive vocals, this track somehow awakened the inner vixen in me. Whenever I listen to this track, I feel like I am being serenaded by 7 sexy men in my bed or maybe in a dim lit lounge or any place with a romantic and sexy ambiance and yeah, with topless Wonho of course. (Oh my! Im really sorry for my 19+ imagines, I just can't help it guys, the feels was too sexy for me to handle. Hahaha) Anywho, back to reality, IM's rapping tone/voice really suits the song, it sounded very manly and sexy. Jooheon sounded very Lil Wayne-y for me tho. Again, since I didn't heard much of Wonho's sexy vocals, I think Shownu and Kihyun showed impressive vocals especially during the bridge part. I just wished they let Wonho sing more parts, I really think his vocals would do good with this kind of track/beat just like what he did during their Hug Me performance in No Mercy.
If One Love, sounded manly and sexy, Monsta X continues to show their manliness but this time with a touch of sensitivity, with this oddly interesting track, Honestly featuring Sistar's Dasom (only for narration). Compared to the previous tracks, this has a light acoustic vibe, that makes me want to sing with them all day long. But what made this track interesting and my favorite was because of the contrast between the song's fell good acoustic vibe and the song lyrics. At first, I really thought the lyrics were sweet, romantic and full of love, like a boy confessing his love towards a girl he likes, but when I looked for its english translation, the lyrics were a bit sad and painful yet it is also relatable, The boys were torn between being completely honest to themselves and their girl thus wanting to end things between them and/or keeling everything to himself, pretending until he fully understands the reason why he suddenly lost interest towards her. Though not everyone will agree with me, but based on my personal experience, no matter how deeply and madly in love you are to your partner, it is inevitable for some (I said SOME, not everyone) to experience waking up in the morning and falling completely out of love to your partner and its up to you whether you stay and make thing work or just let go of everything and move on. Indeed love was never that simple, but also not so complicated. It is always up to us to either make it or break it.
Monsta X picked things up a little with Steal Your Heart. Okay wait, the first few seconds of the track immediately reminded me of EXO's Transformer which by the way was never my EXO jam. The song follows the same flow of Trespass and No Exit; it was upbeat, full of angst and yeah, overly confident (in terms of stealing girl's hearts). A little trivia, Wonho contributed in writing the lyrics along with Jooheon and IM. Way to go bae!
If you're an international fan like me whose knowledge to korean language is limited to annyeong and saranghe, then you are in for a nice treat with Blue Moon. With almost half of the song written and sang in english thanks to Monsta X's resident english man and dictionary IM. The boys takes us to a new yet nostalgic feel with this track. Whenever this song plays, I feel like I'm chilling inside an old jazz bar on a rainy afternoon sipping my favorite cocktail drink. The beat was calming and the piano keys gives off a very nostalgic vibe. The raps were very smooth and it really matches the relaxing tones of the vocal line. This track also reminds me of Vixx's Only U and BAP's Coffee Shop for some weird unknown reason.
Interstellar feat. Yella Diamond with only Jooheon, Hyungwon and IM. Like No Exit, this track was also first featured and performed during their No Mercy days. Honestly this song was the reason that made me saw IM's potential as a member of Monsta X. I have admit, aside from Wonho and Kihyun, I am also a fan of #Gun, and even prefer him over Jooheon, but IM's rapping skills and writing ability in this track was also no joke and he really proved his potential when he first performed it on No Mercy. I remember for a slight moment, I was so into his rapping skills that I really can't focus to #Gun or even my ultimate bias, Wonho. He really did leave a great impact to me because of this performance. This track also showed Hyungwon's confident side, his vocals and dance were on point plus his expressions and gazes were fiery and amazing. And yeah it was "Yella" catchy, especially the "Let's Ride" part.
In summary, I'm giving this EP an 8/10. The album was pretty strong, thinking that they were only formed as one group last February and just debuted for like 2 weeks ago. The song choices were also great, as they showcased Monsta X's great potential as super rookie idols or even record breaking idols in the future. But the song parts/line distribution in this EP disappointed me a little. I know Kihyun and Shownu has great vocal ranges and skills, but I think this EP somehow underestimated Minhyuk, Hyungwon and Wonho's singing abilities. I may be a bit bias here, but I really think Wonho deserves more lines, he may not have the best vocals in the group, but I know and feel that he can also sing some of Kihyun's parts very well. With this EP, I feel like he only became a part of Monsta X because of his pretty face not his talent, which totally pains me. He really can sing, Starship Ent, you've seen him perform and do great during their No Mercy days so why did this happened? Please consider him as well as Minhyuk and Hyungwon in their next EP. Anywho, I am really glad on their debut track, Trespass. It was really good especially for a rookie group like them. They really did great and left a good impression among kpop fanatics. I hope they continue to work hard and do greater things in the future. I'm wishing them luck for the future and I also promise to continuously keep my eye to these boys. I'm really glad these boys didn't disappoint me but rather they made me love and support them even more. Once again, Congratulations to your successful debut and Fighting!

Album Review: Kim Sung Kyu (Infinite) "27"

Infinite's charismatic leader Kim Sung Kyu is back after  three years of solo hiatus with his newest EP "27". The EP contains 6 tracks with "Kontrol" and "The Answer" as double title tracks.

With Infinite H, who recently had their comeback this year, a video teaser from their Wooliment's Youtube Channel and several articles hinting for their group comeback, I was a little surprised by Sung Kyu's comeback, I really thought Infinite will make their group comeback this May.

Anywho, Infinite is one my favorite bias group and since I still love and listens to Sung Kyu's I Need You and 60 Seconds from his previous EP, there's no doubt that I will also listen and make a review for this one. I've heard that this EP was solely produced by Nell's Kim Jong Wan and that Epik High's Tablo was featured in one of the songs. So without further ado, here's my review on Sunggyu's newest EP, 27.
The album opens with 27, an instrumental intro track arranged and composed of Nell's Kim Jongwan. The only thing I can think of with this intro track is his korean age. Omo!
Next is The Answer/It Has To Be You, one of the albums title track and my personal favorite. It  starts off like a ballad, it then catches to a more lively alternative rock feel and as the song progresses, a group of string instruments were then added creating a dramatic orchestra-like musical extravaganza sending shivers down my spine. Aside from its heart felt melody, what really caught my attention to this song were the lyrics. It was painful, desperate and full of longing, like he was really in pain and dying without her. I also love and commend the incorporation of english lyrics that alas says something or contributes to the song's story. I wasn't just random english words and phrases that often tends to be pointless or make non-Korean listeners bleed though their ears. I also like the vocal arrangement for this track, it was really suited to Sung Kyu's full vocal ability. I really am envious of the Inspirits who already heard him sing this track live on stage. I hope one day I can see him perform this live as well. I really think he is one of the idols who can sing perfectly live on stage.
Sung Kyu once again made my heart ache of pain and longing for someone with Alive.Truth is, I don't fully understand why the title was Alive, so a simple random thought came to my mind. I think the girl was either dead or had gone far away from him to the point that he can't do anything to have her back, thus making him ask and wish that if only the girl was still alive and with him, he wouldn't feel the need to empty himself of all her thoughts and memories of her. These sad and longing lyrics combined with soft melancholic piano keys and Sung Kyu's soulful singing, radiates with longing and sad feels. Sigh. Sung Kyu oppa, please don't make me cry.
Next is Kontrol, the second title track off the album and yet again another personal favorite. If I were to choose between The Answer and Kontrol as my current Sung Gyu jam, I would probably pick The Answer, I still can't get enough of the feels and goosebumps every time that song plays, but on the other hand, there is something in Kontrol that makes me want to listen to it over and over again. It has this mystical indie vibe that somehow reminded me of The Chaser for a bit. Lyric-wise, this has the similar heart breaking and longing feel just like the previous tracks, but this time I think it was more desperate as Sung Kyu keeps calling for her to come back. While looking for the english translation of this track, I stumbled upon some kpop forums linking the video of Kontrol to the Sewol Ferry Incident, saying that the song was meant and Sung Kyu's dedication for the Inspirit (a Sung Kyu biased) who was included on the incident, but apparently Sung Kyu and Wooliment cleared the issue stating that the song and the video was in no connection the the incident. Indeed, it was a relief that the issue has been cleared, yet if I were to asked, it would also be nice to know that if it really was dedicated for the Inspirit during the incident, this song will be more meaningful and can definitely make me tear up every time this song plays.
Daydream, my most anticipated track off the album, simply because of Epik High's Tablo was featured in the song together with his Borderline unit partner Kim Jongwan of Nell. Up to this day I'm still in hyped of Epik High's Born Hater, so knowing that Tablo was featured in this track, I was really excited and this was also the very first time Tablo was once again reunited with Wooliment artists which made it much more exciting. Gladly, the song turned out to what I anticipated it to be, it was light, bittersweet, memorable and by far had the most positive longing feels to it. He wasn't destructive to himself just like the previous tracks, it was more of just missing someone from a far. I also love autotuned parts/twists of Sung Kyu's voice through out the song, it made it more interesting to my ears. But what really made to tightly close my eyes and isolate myself from all the noise was Tablo's rap part. His tone was soft yet his words and delivery were sharp, which I think really suits the song arrangement and making it more dreamy to my ears.
Closing the EP is another collaboration/duet with Kpop Star's Park Younha entitled, Reply. This sweet acoustic track was like a simple yet endearing conversation between two lovers, where they can't seem to find to right words to say to one another and just let their actions speak for them. It was very simple that I sometimes think it's a bit lacking and unfinished.
I'm giving this EP an 8.5/10. Though I was expecting more of a group comeback this May, Wooliment and Sung Kyu didn't disappoint me in any way with this EP. Compared to his first EP, Another Me, Sung Kyu did show something new, interesting and great improvement with this new EP. It was mature and full of soul and emotions, and these emotions radiates through me as he sings each and every line of the whole EP. Also, all through out the album, I can't help but be amazed and be mesmerized by his soulful rock voice. It was so good and beautiful that I just want to listen to it all day, which I totally did by the way. In all of my days as an Inspirit, I have never thought of Sung Kyu as my bias wrecker,  but now, it seems like I am already infected with Sung Kyu virus and that I don't want to undergo any treatment.  Haha. Anywho, I'm wishing the best of luck to my new Infinite Bias Wrecker Kim Sung Kyu for his comeback and promotions. We, Inspirits will always be here to support you. Fighting and Congratulations in advance.

Album Review: BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) "In The Mood for Love Pt. 1"

After 8 months of unending concert tours from different parts of the globe (yep, and still more to come), back to back music award showcases and awesome performances, variety show appearances and guesting and  the like, BTS finally made its official comeback to the kpop scene with their newest EP, "In the Mood for Love Pt. 1" on 29th April 2015.

Honestly, I am really looking forward for this comeback, I want to relive the feeling when I first became a fan of them, which was during their "Just One Day" promotions. Haruman took my heart and breath away and I still can't get over with it. In fact, it is the most played song on my playlist followed by Cypher Pt. 3. When it comes to their songs, I really enjoy their soft, mellow, RnB-ish tracks more, than their fast, upbeat, angst-driven tracks, so when I heard the teaser/music preview of their new EP, I literally had goosebumps all over my body. And now that it is officially released, I really am very excited to share my thoughts about this EP.
The EP opens with Intro: In the Mood for Love, solely performed by Suga. Normally, I would just ignore this track since most of the intro tracks were just instrumental, but this one was different, in fact I think this is one of the most interesting intro tracks I've heard so far, not only because the track has lyrics and someone was singing on the track, but everytime I hear this track, I really am intrigued of the meaning behind those words and its connection to the whole EP. Based on my understanding of the lyrics, Suga compares and see's his life like a game of basketball. And just like in every basketball game, there will be times when you are afraid to shoot the ball, when you miss a shot and when you miscalculate things, but in the end no matter how scared and afraid you are of the risks and moves you take, you still go for that one last shot, jump for that one last rebound and you focus more to have that final shot. Thus making you realize that those hardships made who you are now and of course made you happy. I really love the lyrics of this track, comparing one's life to a basketball game sure is creative and intriguing. I really commend Suga for making his favorite sport as an inspiration for such a strong and honest intro track.
I Need U, the title track and by far my most favorite track off this EP. To me this song was perfection. From its beat and arrangement, to lyrics, choreography, styling, concept and mv; everything was just perfect. When I first heard of it, I already knew that it was going to be their winning song. I have been an ARMY for quite sometime, and among their previous tracks and comebacks, this particular track definitely stands out for me. It wasn't the typical Bangtan track filled with angst and swag, it was smooth, honest, mature and just perfectly beautiful. Honestly, I can't still find the right words to describe the feeling that I always have every time I listen to it.  I feels like I am on a roller coaster ride of mixed emotions that is addictive and thrilling. Its painful yet it also makes my heart flutter with love.
Next is Hold Me Tight, another favorite of mine. The track starts off with a beautiful piano melody accompanying Jungkook's beautiful humming, it then gradually catches to a more hip-hop-py beat as the song progresses. To me, this song was like the new "Let Me Know". It gives off the same frustrated feeling of love, attention, and longing that I always feel whenever I listen to it. The lyrics were painfully cheesy that it breaks my heart listening to them confess and ask for the girl to accept them once again. Among the rap verses, J-Hope's part stings to most for me, it sounded really desperate but full of love at the same time. Suga's part however reminded me a little of Drake for some unknown reason. Haha. Vocally, I really love the transition of voices among the vocal team especially Jungkook's and Jimin's switches. I am also beginning to appreciate more of Jin's vocal skills with this song, I think this was the first time I listened to him without imagining him struggling or being awkward as he sings his part. And lastly, the very reason why I am addicted to his track is mainly because of Jimin's high notes. It was pure eargasm nothing more, nothing less.
Sick. If Hold Me Tight was my new Let Me Know, Sick is definitely my new Jump, War of Hormone and Paldogansan. The track gives off an inviting vibe to just party and have fun. The lyrics were also playful and catchy especially V's screaming parts. This track will definitely be included in my Turn Up Party Mix Playlist. It also reminded me of Amber's Shake that Brass and Jason Derulo's Trumpet, mainly because of the playful horn sounds.
Up next is Bangtan Diss, a funky dance track about them as fun boys. I first heard of this addictive track in one of the fancams during the BTS Begins concert in Seoul, and just like my initial reaction when I first saw it, I immediately stood up, uttered and sang weird korean pronunciation lyrics and did my silly version of Taehyung's Wo Wo Wo Wo Dance. If I am going to compare this track to previous BTS hits, this surely brings back the Attack on Bangtan feels, where I can feel all my muscles twitch as all of my nerve endings fire unstoppable amounts of serotonin to my entire body. It's really exciting and fun to listen and especially watch them perform it carelessly on stage. The lyrics, the beat and the way they perform it really suits its title. I also think Taehyung did an incredible performance in this track, all his parts and adlibs really made the song more fun and intoxicating. And lastly, I really love the part where Taehyung and Jin's vocal harmonizes during the Wo Wo Wo Wo part, its really addictive! Ugh! Still can't get enough of this super catchy track.
Converse High. I remember my sister spazzing about this track during BTS Begins. She was just full of uncontrollable almost manic feels and even convinced me to buy her a converse high for her birthday, and my response was like "Huh? What is wrong with you?". Now, after hearing the track without all those fangirl screams, I now understand why she was spazzing that time. This sweet, feel good track definitely rose the feels meter higher among Army's, especially to those who had a pair of converse high. Who would not melt and fall for a group of boys singing about how their sweet admiration on someone who wears a simple converse high right? But honestly, the real reason why I a am currently spazzing to this song like crazy was because of Yoongi's rap, especially this part,
"Anyway, when you meet me,
Don't wear converse shoes
It's too hard to take them off of you"
OMG!! Yoongi, why?? I didn't know you have such a naughty mind. Kyaaa! This is too much! I just can't take it anymore so much feels, mianhe.
The boys toned it down a bit, with a smooth soulful (more like very personal) track, Move. One of the reasons why I stan and fell in love with them is because of their truthful and sincere lyrics, and this particular track really touched my heart. The song talks about them moving from being trainees to something better, thus being what they are now - as BTS. Everytime I listen to this track, I can really feel their worries, frustrations, their hunger and thirst for success and at the same time I can also feel their genuine happiness and relief on moving forward and finally being able to reach and make their dreams come true.
Outro:Love is Not Over, the final track off the album. Like their previous outro tracks, the vocal line once again takes all the credits for this beautiful RnB-ish ballad track closing the EP. Amongst all the outro's BTS produced, this is by far my favorite surpassing my long time favorite outro, Propose. Just like their previous outro's, the track was also short yet this time I personally think the harmonies and arrangement were better, or even perfect to my senses and of course how can I forget those heart fluttering lines that gives off so much feels to my noona heart.
In summary, I'm giving this EP a 9/10. I really had high expectations towards this EP and I am really am glad that the EP met my expectations. As I listen to every song, I became more attached and in love to it that I sometimes lost track on how many times the song has been playing in my ears. I also think that the vocal line did improve a lot and sounded much better. It somehow feels like that this EP was made to showcase the better BTS vocal line, just like what Dark & Wild did for the rapper line. Though I am a Suga stan (rapper line fan), I personally think, the rapper line had less lines and exposure throughout the whole EP, but I also think the extra lines and exposure for the vocal team was one of the reason why this EP sounded more beautifully and that it really matches the concept of the whole EP as well. In the future, I hope to see more improvements on both rapper and vocal lines. I am also looking forward to Suga's upcoming mixtape, and yes I will make sure to make an review about it as well. Lastly, Congratulations to BTS's 5th Win! Yey!  I knew you'd make it! Hoping for more successful comebacks and performances. Wishing you all the very best. Fighting!

Album Review: CLC (Crystal Clear) "First Love"

In one of my previous blog post (The A-List: My Top 3 Most Awaited KPOP Group Debuts of 2015), I said that I am looking forward for Cube Entertainment's new girl group CLC, and now that they had already debuted and released their first mini album "First Love", there is no better way to show my support and love for them but to give my honest review on their EP. I know, its pretty late since it's almost a month since their debut. Truth is, I lost track of time because I was really busy at work especially during the Holy Week. Being a public safety officer during a week long holiday was hella tiring and busy, so I have to set aside my blogging in order for me to focus on my work. But none the less, since it was all over now, I can finally write and share my thoughts that I had kept since last week and to start with, here is my review on CLC's first mini album, First Love.
First track off the album is Cafe Mocha Please, a jazzy funk track with a touch of disco. The first thing I did noticed not only to this song but to the whole EP itself, is that CLC sounded mature yet cute at the same time, and this song proved my observation. First, the beat of a song sounded very jazzy and disco-ish, and based on most of the girl groups who debuted this year, its either you sound annoyingly cute or awkwardly sexy, but with this kind of beat, I think neither of the two will do good for this track, so I really am impressed on how CLC delivered this track. It has the perfect balance of being cute and sexy (more of mature actually), thus making it sound like you're watching a special musical performance rather than just a typical intro track for the album. This track really gave me a good impression and somehow raise my expectation of the whole EP itself.
Next up, EP's title track Pepe. The song started out with a simple repetitive piano note and a lot of finger snapping or was it clapping? not sure, anywho it somehow reminded me of a little showgirl/dreamgirl/musical performance because of its jazzy feeling and their vocal tones. It then catches up to a more upbeat dancy tune with the additions of drums, trot and of course their cute "Hubiruae Pepe". As a title track, I'm giving this a thumbs up. Its incredibly catchy and they showcased something I haven't seen for a long time, which is the perfect mix of cute and sexy, coz I honestly am fed up of the cutesy girl groups popping out everywhere, and the disturbingly sexy groups are way worse. The song and CLC itself both have the right amount of acceptable cuteness and sexy teasing (the vocals have this some kind of sexiness and maturity, especially Seung Hee's), which i think is a good combo and they really showcased it with this song. I sometimes think they are the perfect hybrid of APink and 4Minute, which I think is good, its like having both your 2 most favorite ice cream flavors in one, and who doesn't want that right? The only thing that I didn't like with this song were the wardrobe choices in the music video, I am so not pleased with that "black cheer leader one piece dress and that awful pink varsity jacket," it really threw me off, but other than that I think everything was great, especially the maknae's rap part, coz I am really impressed with her, she even sounded better to other rappers who debuted way earlier than her.
As I've said, they were like the perfect hybrid of both APink and 4Minute, and with this next song Sharala, their APink genes and feels really shines through. When I first heard of it, I really thought it was an APink song, but then I heard Seung Hee's beautiful voice. Oh dear, she is becoming my bias wrecker, I really like Sorn but her voice is just, ughh! I can't help but listen to it. Anywho, I consider this song as my favorite in the album so far, its light and magical, like the feeling of being in love, which I personally think of as a really magical feeling. Coz when you're in love, no matter how bad your day is, you still feel good and happy right? I also like how innocent and honest the lyrics were, though it talks about having her very first kiss, I know its not an innocent topic, but the way they tell the story its really sweet and innocent to hear. In summary, I just love this song, because it made me feel loved as well.
First Love. CLC strips it down a little more, with an acoustic guitar and some percussion instruments the girls serenades once again with their soft voices. Everytime I hear this song it takes me back to their pre-debut days, where they used perform in the streets of Hongdae. First love gives off that nostalgic feeling, where they would line up, each other holding their own instruments and sing their hearts out as people passed by or stop and sing with them. As I listen to the song, I feel warm and cozy inside just like their pre-debut days, where they sing softly in the streets of Hongdae even though its winter and yet people feel warm and cozy by just listening to them.
Open the Window, the last track off the album. Amongst all the tracks off the album which were all about the goodness of love, this track took on a different path and talked about the bitterness of love, separation. By just listening to it even without looking to its english translation I already know and felt that it will be a sad song about love. Seung Hee and Seung Yoon sounded very emotional and lonely, and Yee Eun's rap also gives off that sad and bitter feeling of separation. I can see myself listening to this song during the rainy days where I just want to tuck myself in bed and listen to mellow songs all day.
In summary, I giving this EP a 7.5/10. It has some of the things that I expected them to be and they also showcased things that I was missing for a long time. In terms of their vocal skills and talent, there is no doubt Cube Entertainment did a pretty decent job in training them, they really did sound and look like pro's and even better among other established girl groups. The only thing that I think is lacking in them is their group identity, for some reason I think they haven't completely established the main concept of their group since I really see them as either APink or 4Minute. I know I have said that it's good to be compared and be seen as these 2 successful groups, but being seen as a copy of something will not guarantee a group's success in the future, or it can even torn them apart. I hope in the coming days, they can finally establish the group's real and final concept. I really think these girls are amazingly talented and I hope their talent will not go to waste. I also would like to see more of them in the future and I hope for them to continue honing their individual talents for them to shine even more and also have the attention and support they deserve. Fighting CLC!

Album Review: EXO - K "The Second Album: Exodus"

This is purely based on my opinion and music preferences. No hating please.

After successful solo debuts from Jonghyun, Amber, Donghae and Eunhyuk and Red Velvet's comeback, SM Entertainment continues to drop musical bombs making the Kpop scene a chaotic yet beautiful mess with its biggest comeback yet this year, EXO! Yes! EXO's back! After weeks of teasing and endless problem solving among EXO L's, both EXO K and EXO M officially made their comeback with their second album "Exodus".

Truth be told, I'm no EXO fan, but not a hater as well, I just randomly listen to some of their songs. Since their debut in 2012, there were only two occurrences where these boys caught my attention. One was during their "Growl" promotions where I was so hooked in their choreography. And secondly, with their recent comeback "Call Me Baby". I have to admit, when I first heard it, and automatically got stucked to my head and I am loving it. With that being said, how about I make a review on their album (Korean Version)? Maybe I get to appreciate them more right?

The album opens with its title track Call Me Baby. Earlier I mentioned that this track caught my attention and I am currently addicted to it, how about I share the reasons why? First, its causes good LSS and is not disturbingly repetitive, in fact whenever I listen to it, I'm always looking forward to the chorus part, especially the "Call me Baby" lines. Second, I really like the arrangement of the song, I kept me guessing on what to expect to hear next, whether I would hear Chen's airy and sexy voice or Chanyeol's manly rap. Third, I really love the concept of the video and I'm still digging that one shot frame, though others say its so overdone and has to stop. Fourth, Kai's part was pure eargasm, that "boom boom boom" sends shivers down my spine. I'm no EXO fan, in fact if I'm going to choose which member I am somehow attracted to I would prefer Xiumin than Kai, but gosh this guy really lives up to being EXO's Face/Visual, such a bias wrecker. Hahaha. All in all, I think it is a perfect title track for the album and fortunately this song makes sense, cuz honestly up to this day I still dont get what "Mama" and "Wolf" really means.

Transformer. If Call Me Baby was a joy, this track gave me pure confusion. Though I really like that military like drum or what not intro, I'm sorry but I'm really not into the monotone rapping that's happening and yes it somehow it turned me off. The only thing that made me to at least listen to this track while making this review was mainly because of the beat itself, nothing else.

Next up, What If, one of the album's saving grace track for me. If I was confused and somehow disappointed in Transformer, this track made me regain interest on this album. With its feel good RnB-ish tempo and of course the feels (this track radiates sexiness in a good and conservative way), it certainly washed away all my confusion from the previous track. I also love how smooth and relaxing the vocals were; good control, adlibs and transitions, thumbs up for EXO vocal line. And one more thing, I really love the fisrt part of the song, that whisper like singing really set the mood of the song, making me want to listen to it even more.

EXO continues to melt my heart with their sweet vocals in My Answer, another album's saving grace track. With soft piano keys accompanying their gentle voices, this track is definitely a keeper for my KPOP Mellow playlist. According to my sister who was once an EXO L, among the the now 10 membered group, only 3 from EXO K sang this song namely Suho, DO and Baekhyun and all I can say is that I really am impressed on how the song turned out. Their voices beautifully compliments one another without overpowering each other as well. And like "What If", it had good control and balance, the high notes were also on point and somehow addicting that I always find myself repeating the final chorus where DO belts his heart out. Another thing, amongst all the tracks on this album, I really am in love with the lyrics of this track, it was beautifully written that it really melts my heart everytime I hear the chorus part and I really am glad that they conveyed the song's message beautifully, so Kudos for DO, Suho and Baekhyun and I hope to hear more from these guys.

Next, EXO picks things up with a more mid-tempo track, Exodus. For some unknown reason, this song reminded me of SHINee's Jonghyun, like this track was somehow meant for him, I guess. I know I'm being a little bias here, but I think Jonghyun can make a beautiful version of this track as well. Anywho, I think this track is way better compared to Transformer, fortunately instead of monotone rapping, I think I'm hearing the rapper line singing not rapping, which I think fits the song appropriately. The song sure is catchy like "Call Me Baby" that it grows within you as you repeatedly listen to it.

El Dorado, a mystical track that I honestly despise when I first heard it, but then as I listen to it repeatedly while writing this review, I came to realize that "dang, this track is good." In fact, while listening to it, it gives off the feeling of "winning" or "accomplishing something". It may sound that I'm weird but that's what I really felt while repeatedly listening to it. Also based on my understanding of the lyrics,

"In this dangerous journey, obstacles kept coming
But we've become one and have overcome everything
The light is getting bigger
No pain no gain, this is a world of mystery
Add all ten fingers to the circle above, we are one"

I think this song was about them walking towards their obstacles and then finally overcoming them. With all the ruckus EXO had been in the past year, I guess this song is their response that they are definitely back and ready to once again conquer the KPOP scene.

Playboy, another song that reminded me of SHINee's Jonghyun but this time I know the reason why; because he wrote, composed and arranged it. Though this song most definitely suits Jonghyun's voice and singing style, I think EXO did manage to pull it off and make the song theirs. I also think the rap parts really helped a lot making this an EXO track, coz the vocal parts really sounded very Jonghyun only less sexy for me. And before I forgot, Gosh! There goes Kai's sexy voice again, why Kai? Why are you shaking my heart like this? Haha!

Hurt. When I first heard the song, I was creeped out by the creepy piano playing intro that I often hear in old movies and horror movies, then it changes into an upbeat club like tempo, which I really don't understand why and how it all happened like that. I don't know this track for me is in equal disappointment to Transformer. I know the beat is nice, but I'm really not into it, its just weird to my ears and nothing more.

Next up is Lady Luck. Hold up! Did I just heard a girl moaning in some parts of the song? EXO L's please enlighten me. The song started with what I think is beatboxing mixed with autotuned EDM like beats, then as the song progresses I heard several random moans which sounded really weird. I say I really like the beat and vocals here and that it radiates sexiness, but those moans were really not necessary for me. It just made the song dirty for me, and that dirtiness was not in any way appealing to me as well. If EXO was trying to appeal among EXO L's as sexy namjas who can sing sexually driven tracks, I guess they should just stop doing it and focus on only singing and dancing catchy tunes. This type of sexiness is a bit over the top for them I guess.
The album ends with Beautiful, a feel good low tempo track full of finger snapping and a weird mosquito/airplane like sound (sorry, I really can't find the right words to describe it). I say, the beat was really interesting though I think I've heard it somewhere before, but none the less, I once again thing they sang it beautifully, with the right curls, tone, and notes. It is indeed a good track to conclude the album.

In summary, I giving this album an 8/10. I didn't really expect myself to like and listen to their songs, but I guess it can't be helped since I genuinely think some of the songs from this album were really worthy to be included to my playlist and compared to their previous albums, this is by far their best yet. I couldn't asked for a better album, since I, myself is already contented on what the album had to offer. It's not a perfect album, yet it's not trashy as well, which is good since it will open the opportunity for them to work better and improve more for their next EP/album right? I also think the good songs somehow compensates the bad and lacking ones. So all in all, there was no harm done to my eardrums while listening to it (which is good), and in fact they caught my attention even more. With that, I'm looking forward more of EXO in the future.

A's recommended tracks: "Call Me Baby", "What If". "My Answer" .

Album Review: Minah (Girl's Day) "I Am A Woman Too"

Girl's Day resident cutie and power belter Minah, released her first solo album entitled "I Am a Woman Too." I actually didn't expect this to happen, I know she has an incredible voice plus Girl's Day garnered a lot of attention in the past years making them more popular now, but I was expecting more of a unit from Girl's Day, more like a Sojin & Minah duet or perhaps a Yura & Minah tandem to happen. But none the less, I'm still rooting for these girls, coz I freaking adore them, so here I am listening to my girl Minah as she trails her way into spotlight. Fighting!

The Ep contains 5 tracks, with 3 original songs and 2 instrumentals. And first up on the list is That's So Weird featuring Kanto of Troy. Upon hearing the  first few seconds, this song automatically reminded me of Tamia's Officially Missing You. I know they don't sound alike that much, but still there were parts of this song especially the guitar strumming that really has the Tamia feels to it. Anywho, the song simply talks about the feeling of being in love; that she feels strange on how she can't stop looking to his pictures, doesn't know what to wear, doesn't know how to react when he's around, and why she misses him all the time. Love is indeed weird right? Haha. Aside from it's cutely written yet straight forward lyrics and it's feel good R&B-ish tempo, I really love Kanto's rap parts in this song, it added flavor to the song making it more interesting to my ears.

Next is I Am A Woman Too, the EP's title track. First of all, Minah really looks beautiful in the MV, though she looked like she matured way too much her actual age because of her make up and styling, I think she somehow managed to pull it off in her own way and gosh I envy her legs on that video. As a song, I give it a thumbs up, but for being the album's title track, well maybe its a bit no for me. I know she sang it beautifully with all those whisper/falsetto like notes or whatsoever, plus she looked and sounded really sexy which I think serve its sole purpose which is to make Minah more appealing to her adoring fans especially her male fans. But honestly, it sounded like everything was in chaos, and I really am not digging the fan chant like raps on every verse of the song. Furthermore, I'm still on the process of understanding on why there is a "Sing it with me now" and "I love you, love you (well there is nothing wrong with these lyrics per se, but the "eyy's and uh uh"s were disturbing for me) part. I know it made the song more memorable and catchy, but it really threw me off.  I don't know, I am not really feeling it as of the moment.

Third is Colorful, if I were to choose which song I prefer to be the EP's title track, I will definitely pick this one. First, this song really showcased her vocal prowess, unlike the first two songs where it felt like her singing were a little restricted.. Second, when I first heard it, I already know it's the Minah song, something that was really meant for her to sing and perform, coz to me the first two songs especially the title track made me think and feel that Sojin would be a better fit on singing and performing it. Third, this song is lively, cheery and adorable with just Minah singing it, like there is no need for her to look and act very sexy to prove her existence. I mean, her voice and singing abilities were already appealing and sexy so why overdo it right? I also think its better to see her cute and sexy rather than matured and sexy.

The last 2 songs were instrumentals, so I guess this concludes my review on Minah's first album. Honestly, the album appeals to me like it was rushed and no proper planning was made. I heard that Dream Tea Entertainment said that they have been preparing for Minah's album way before and that preparations were made, but it doesn't appeal to me like they did everything though. Up to this date, I'm still wondering on how, why and when did this all happen, I know, Girl's Day has been in the music industry for quite some time and yes I really think they deserve to at least have solo's or units, but everything really feels rushed and weird. They should have at least released teaser videos of her preparing for the album, not just BAM! Minah will be releasing her first album this March straight to your face. Anywho, even though I still feel weird about it, I will continue to listen to this album, maybe one day I'll get to love everything about it and not feel strange at all.So I guess, its a 7/10 for me. It's a little rough and please for her next EP at least devise a good plan for it. I also think at least this EP has decent and ear worthy words and beats unlike other songs/EP's that I have encountered lately. It also has the Minah feels/vibe to it, which is very girly so I still like it. Since Minah has debuted as a solo artist, I am hoping for a Sojin solo or a unit perhaps? Please! And before I forgot, Congratulations Minah for your debut and Fighting!!

Album Review: Donghae & Eunhyuk (Super Junior) "The Beat Goes On"

This is purely based on my opinion and music preferences. No hating please.

Alas! My favorite Super Junior couple Donghae & Eunhyuk (YES! I ship them. Oh, such beautiful creatures.) have finally released their very first physical album entitled "The Beat Goes On." Flashback to 2012, when I first saw them in Oppa, Oppa! Man, these two rocked that yellow and red suits and still manage to be super handsome even they look and act silly. Woot! Anywho, since it was already a very long wait for ELF's especially Eunhae Elf's like me, there is no better way to show my love to them but to indulge my ears with their music and how about I share my insights to other Elf''s as well.  자!!

The album opens with The Beat Goes On, a feel good EDM filled song that to me sounded like a remix/mash up of Bonamana, Sorry Sorry, Sexy Free & Single & Mamacita (for the aya ya part) with a pinch of f(x)'s whimsical music. It even made me think, maybe this song was meant for Super Junior or at least they considered it right? It totally has that Super Junior feels in it.

Next up the album's title track, Growing Pains. It starts off with a soft guitar riff then accompanied by another set of whimsical piano (not really sure though) notes. Donghae's vocals were perfect and on point as well as Eunhyuk's killer rap. The chorus part was definitely an eargasm moment for me, their voices blended perfectly without overpowering one another. And can I just say that I am starting to fall in love with Eunhyuk's voice. Before I always see him as a rapper, but because of this song (actually the EP), I realized I missed a lot and what the hell have I been doing ignoring Eunhyuk's voice this whole time. Ughh! I'm sorry my Anchovy. This song is just perfect for me, nuff said. A trivial note: This song was composed and written by Donghae; not just a beautiful man, he really has talent. I love you Oppa! (fangirling moment!)

D&E continues to cause arrhythmias to my kpop heart with Sweater and Jeans. With a more laid back and a little mellow beat, the boys serenades with lyrics:
"You are my vintage sweater and jeans
Always on my body"
&
"Would you be my forever?
Be my Marilyn, I'll be your James Dean."
Like seriously? Who wouldn't fall for that, right? Ugh! What a tease. Anyway, Eunhyuk continues to mesmerize me with his lovely voice. With no rap parts for this track, this song really showcased both of their sweet voices, and I feel like Eunhyuk is singing his parts effortlessly than Donghae. Haha

Breaking Up, a very interesting break up track opens up in a very opera like manner, with string instruments setting its beat then gradually catches into a groovy disco tempo. How can a break up song be this groovy and feel good, right? But then realization strikes, it's kpop, nothing is impossible so might as well live with it. Plus I really like it, though its about breaking up, the beat itself is really addicting.

Lights, Camera, Action!, Okay, this is current morning prep jam. It really gets me all pumped up and ready to start the day and YES, I put my hands up when "LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS UP" plays. Why not? Its hella catchy and really gets me going. And I also feel like I'm partying with them whenever this song plays. Haha! So YOLO!

Next is Can You Feel It?, when I first heard of it, I know this is going to be another Oppa Oppa! moment for me. And yes, my boys didn't disappoint me. So yesterday, as I am doing my youtube browsing, I saw this thumbnail "150315 Super junior D&E - Can You Feel It @ M! Countdown", clicked on it and BAM! flashback and memories of my obsession and fangirling during the Oppa Oppa days. I honestly can't find the right words to describe my happiness seeing them super cute with their little pigtails on. Kyaaa!! Though the song is basically the least of being beautifully written in this EP with its repetitive lyrics and other mindless elements on it, this song for me is still entertaining both in my eyes and ears, I guess its better not to google about the lyrics so it wouldn't spoil the fun and of course the feels. Haha!

Wrapping things up and another Donghae masterpiece brought to life is Mother. A heartwarming ballad  full of gratitude and love dedicated for their mothers. With sweet lyrics like:
Love you Mother, I love you
Like no other, I thank you
Now I'll be your strength and return that big smile
Im pretty sure, every mother or woman who heard this will feel warm and loved inside. Oh! Donghae, you really are the sweetest. I also like, the almost acapella part, where I imagined Donghae and Eunhyuk singing this is front of their moms then a choir pops out singing the song with them clapping, swaying and moving in similar directions. By the way, I heard Eunhyuk's mom despised Donghae before because Donghae is always trolling on Eunhyuk, with this song I hope her feelings towards Donghae would soften at least. Haha.

I'm giving this a 9/10. I really love and waited for this album for such a long time. To me this album gave me what I expected it to be, though there were little bumps and missed turns, I really think they have provided an ear-worthy album that will be on my playlist for a very long time. And I still can't help myself on obsessing with Eunhyuk's voice, so yes this album sure is a keeper. Another thing that I really liked about this album is that, it never made me feel bored while listening to it, there were different music elements in it that really made me hit the repeat button multiple times. I already know in my guts, that this EP will do real good in any music program or even in record sales, so I'm congratulating them in advance. All I wish is for them is to continue making good music and please grant us, the Eunhae Elf's our eternal wish which is for the two of you to live happily ever after. Haha. Kiddin'. Again, Kudos Donghae and Eunhyuk.
